when does the first snow come?
what are the roads like in the winter?
Are there better winter routes to the top than the summer trail? (from a hazard perspective)
What kind of snow levels can one expect in the fall and winter in Nor Cal?
(im moving down your way for a few months, just scoping the possibilities that are within half a day from east bay)

- The mtn. is pretty much closed from winter, to I guess April or May, when they start plowing (the Park Road). The TH for the Peak, opens sometime around Mem. Day offering the best access for the summit !

The mountain is really not closed in winter.
It offers a lot of good skiing.
The road closes  with significant snowfall, but there is access from the north at manzanita lake and in the south  at the ranger station / entrance.
Manzanita lake in the north is at 5900 ft so it is relatively low and provides a fairly flat access to Lassen peak either  accross the jumbles or up manzanita creek trail.
Good stuff can be also found on and around Loomis .
Last winter it had a better snow pack then Shasta early on.
In the south you can access the peak by going up the road.
It is a nice trip to ski up to and camp at helen lake below the peak.
From there, there is a lot of choices.
Lassen provides a lot of winter fun and has a large variety of terrain with better protection from high winds compared to Shasta.

- Yaa, I'm unfortunately a 'heavy' skier, so I do the Lassen thing when the road opens. Come down to Tahoe in winter and 'BC' the Mt Rose area for the fresh.
PS- there is a Lassen Ski guide available on Amazon.
