First trip to Catherine and I must have picked the wrong day. I was intrigued by the route description from Martin's book and managed to coerce a couple others to do a little recon.

So where's the skiing? I mean, talk about no payoff. The conditions were tough so maybe on a real powder day the NW shoulder yeilds decent turns through the trees, but it was jump turns all the way down and then a slog out through Nordic Pass and out and up to Hyak.

It was a good conditioner though and, as always, beats eating Ruffles on the couch.

Looks like if we'd headed to Silver Basin we might have salvage some turns.
You gotta have good conditions in the trees for this one, which tends to mean a decent and recent dump of snow. I'm guessing the trees you encountered were either tree bombed, tree peed, or both, even if they had a small bit of powder on top.
