high avy danger and being tired of commonwealth and kendall sent us to mighty mount catherine today.  yesterday's warm had left quite a crunchy crust on top for us in the early morning.  around 4,500 feet at about 9:50am the snow was softening.  for grins (or frowns) i did a hasty pit and quick shovel test on the summit ridge of catherine.  north facing 40ish degree slope at 5,000 feet i found an STV Q1.  it seemed to be quite a bit more stable just 50 feet lower in the trees as i ski cut and then skied a 50 degree slope that i was sure would move but didn't.

today was more about being out in the sun with good friends and less about the turns.

Went 1/2 to Source lk with a friend for lunch around 1-2 PM.  Slides could be heard every 5-10 minutes..  They sounded pretty large, didn't get to see any :( but they appeared to be coming down almost all aspects.

Glad to hear it was (more) stable in the AM.  What time did you get out by?

i think we were skinning by 7:20am.

What is the best way to get from Hyak to Catherine?  The last time we tried to ski in, we were turned around by a Summit volunteer patroller because we didn't have ski passes.  She gave us the impression that the trail to Catherine was marked, but difficult to find.

there is a gps map of our route on the blog entry i listed in the post.
