Six inches on solid crust up through the trees. About 4,000 feet snow depth increased to a foot to a foot and a half of not-great snow above the bedrock crust. As we went up, we encountered a variety of depths and densities and all too often a very thin surface crust. High wind on the crest of the ridge - so much for a tour in the calm before the next front.
Tough skiing on the way down but Meg showed us how to carve through the crud.

I was gonna do Granite, but it's either the west bowl or the south face for a ski....and I was skeptical of the amount of sun Friday...
Hey John,
You must be the guy with the gal that my two buddies and I past that was having problems with his binding? if so I hope that got resolved. We decided that since the wind was primarily from the east we would head to the west of west granite. none of us had ever been to the area so we were extremely excited when we came across this beautiful glades with open slopes and about 800-900' lines. We did the stability test at the top and saw about 2' of consolidate snow to a thin ice crust which sheered a q2 but we couldn't get to fail or propagate with the taps. The snow was about knee deep in areas and it was by far the best skiing any of us have had this year. All in all we got 4 amazing runs in with perfect ( as it gets here) knee deep powder. I'm still on that high from the runs. Skinning steep terrain through the trees was challenging as the icy crust was only a few inches down and we kept sliding on that.
