Northwest Mountaineering Journal
Announcement and Call For Submissions

A team of volunteers from the Northwest climbing community, in collaboration with The Mountaineers, is launching a new journal of mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest. The mission of the Northwest Mountaineering Journal is to be an edited, permanent, annual record of mountaineering in this region. The journal will document the events, people, history and spirit of climbing and other mountain sports in the Northwest.

The Northwest Mountaineering Journal will be published on the World-Wide Web. The journal fills a void that has existed since the Mountaineer Annual ceased publication ten years ago. Since then, the American Alpine Journal has shifted its focus to the international climbing scene and the national climbing magazines have covered the Northwest only sporadically. The journal will complement recent Internet developments like the CascadeClimbers.com website by providing a peer-reviewed, edited record of Northwest mountaineering. Submission guidelines for the 2004 journal are provided below.

Northwest Mountaineering Journal
Submission Guidelines - 2004

The Northwest Mountaineering Journal covers all aspects of mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest, from high alpine climbing to lowland rock and ice climbing to ski mountaineering. New route reports, historical or research articles, profiles of interesting people, and land use and access issues are all appropriate topics for the journal. Also welcome are pieces that capture a timely or timeless aspect of Northwest mountaineering, regardless of whether they describe a pioneering climb or historic event. The journal is assembled by a volunteer editorial team drawn from the Northwest mountaineering community and The Mountaineers.

The journal will be published on the World-Wide Web. The target date for 2004 publication is the beginning of summer. The deadline for submissions is April 30, although earlier submissions will be gladly accepted by the editorial team. During 2004, our first year of publication, we expect to publish two installments, the main journal at the beginning of summer and a supplement at the beginning of winter. This schedule will facilitate publishing startup as we strive to make the journal well known and established. The submission deadline for the winter supplement will be October 31.

We encourage contributors to submit brief accounts (100-500 words) of new routes or other developments as well as feature articles (1500-2500 words). Longer articles may be accepted at the discretion of the editorial team. Submissions should be sent by e-mail to the address shown below. If you are uncertain of whether your article is appropriate for the journal, please send a query describing your idea to the editorial team. When submitting an article by e-mail, save it as a text file and attach it to your message.

We also encourage contributors to submit relevant photographs. Digital photos, totaling up to 500 kilobytes, may be submitted by e-mail. If your submission is larger than that, please copy it to a compact disk (CD) and send it by regular post or copy it to a website and e-mail us a link. We also accept both black-and-white and color slides and prints submitted by regular post. Contact the editorial team by e-mail for instructions before mailing CDs, color slides or prints. While the editorial team will handle all photographic submissions with the utmost care, we cannot, as unpaid volunteers for a non-profit publication, compensate photographers for any loss or damage that might occur to original, hard-copy photographs. Therefore, submission of digital copies by e-mail or CD is recommended. Topos and maps are also encouraged.

Send queries and submissions by e-mail to "This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.".
