Brenda and I made the trip Fri after work, with a sleep break in La Grande, and then heading on through Joseph to the Salt Crk snow park Sat morning. We found new snow that varied in depth from a few inches to 18" or more depending on wind exposure. Wind on the high ridges was brutal, but once in the protected bowls most aspects skied pretty well, with NW being the best. Sunday was brutal wind with blowing snow everywhere. No chance on the ridges, and many nw aspects were developing nasty slab. Mostly toured, but found SE slope with shallow powder covering the crust that skied pretty well, then some protected pockets of powder down among the young lodgepole. Monday we had sun and got a decent ski by climbing the bowl on the more northern end of the ridge. Varied from slabby to powder to crust. Many slopes off the ridges are scoured down to the ground. Noticed a couple naturals off some loaded NW aspects.
Looks like some of those burn areas would be great tree skiing...
the great thing about those burn areas is that they all seem to be on the northern aspects. There are more burn areas in the bowls further north on the ridge as well as south from the one in my photo.
