Our initial plan was to head up to Snoqualmie for some touring around Hyak or Alpenthal. Due to the weather up there and I90 closure, we decided to head up to Stevens Pass and tour the Yodelin area.
We got to Stevens Pass around 10:30 and left the Yodelin parking lot around 11. When we left winds were calm and we had an overcast sky. No precipitation. We headed initially straight up through the forest till we hit the forest road. The plan was to follow the road up to an area that I toured back in January.
The misery started when we hit the road. The road had about 4 feet of fluffy snow with tough vegetation. Moving along it meant constantly getting stuck in branches making the ascent miserable. It took us about 2h to get to the first switch back of the road. Once we got there, we decided to call it a day and skin back out. We figured skiing out was going to be dangerous because it was too easy to get caught in all the vegetation. :(
If there isnt a better approach, looks like Yodelin needs some more snow before it gets accessible. :-
