Sweet. Looking forward to it, and to BenK for bringing the house down at the Rando Rally in his Knieval 1-piece.

VertFest Update: Sign-ups
As many of you know, our goals for VertFest are very simple:
1) Put smiles on the faces of participants 2) Donate money to NWAC
Last year we had online signups and professional timing, but both of these violated, to some extent, point 2 above. It costs money to do these things, so we're simplifying the process for 2009. We'll still have accurate timing and reporting on results - no worries there. But...
...signups will be day-of-event only. We will accept checks and cash for payment when you go through the registration process in the morning. We thank everyone in advance for your support of this decision as it will preserve our ability to donate the maximum amount to NWAC.
More updates to come.
How about some snow now?

Has there been any discussion of having a race at Baker too?

Hello from OR!
It's that time again... VertFest is starting to take up more and more of our time around the office and we are super excited that we can finally able to cross something off our list. Our VertFest website is finally up and running!!
Check it out at www.outdoorresearch.com/vertfest
While there is more information to come, the basics of both events are listed.
We included the course maps from previous years. We can't be sure that the courses will follow these maps exactly, as that will depend on weather and avalanche conditions, but it is a good place to start in terms of deciding which race you would like to participate in.
You'll notice that we also included an RSVP button. Two things about this:
1.) This is NOT your registration, registration will take place the morning of the race. This is just to let us know you are thinking about coming so that we can make sure we have enough swag and enough beer!!!
2.) We promise that this will not cause you to get spam.
So check it out, let us know if you think you are coming, and keep an eye out, we will keep the VertFest website updated with all new info.
In the mean time, be safe out there and let us know if you have questions!
Cheers!
Sam

Great stuff, I'll try and attend.
Any chance you (or Martin Volken if course setting) could have LESS downhill traversing on the Crystal Mountain course? Its was really quite unpleasant from a splitboarding point of view!
Thanks

Hey Gang:
Here's a quick reminder about VertFest Crystal coming up in just a little over a week. Come down to Crystal on Saturday, February 28th and enjoy some vert with us.
Check out the website at www.outdoorresearch.com/vertfest and RSVP so we know how much beer to bring.
See you soon.

Hey Haggis,
Good question, and concern about the traversing section at the Crystal Race. Unfortunately, due to the snowpack ( or lack there-of) the boss-man Martin has informed me that the course will be the same as it was last year.
Sorry about that, being a split-boarder myself I can certainly understand the concern. But hopefully the rest of the course makes up for it!
Hope to see you up there!
Cheers, Sam

Hey everyone!
Don't forget that the 3rd Annual VertFest is this Saturday at Crystal Mountain!
There are rumors of snow in the forecast, so we anticipate having an excellent course!
If you are looking for more info you can find it at: www.outdoorresearch.com/vertfest or send me a PM.
There are tons of prizes for racers, prizes for raffle, swag and lots of free beer! Don't miss out!
If you are thinking about racing, don't forget to bring your pack, shovel, probe and transceiver!
Hope to see you there! Sam

Big thanks to Outdoor Research, ProGuiding, Crystal Mountain, Friends of the Avalanche Center, and the other folks who contributed to the Crystal VertFest. The race was as fun as it was tiring. My legs felt like lead at the end.
I was especially impressed by how the OR folks really stepped up to the plate in the swag department. In this tough economy, they were really generous with the event and raffle prizes.
It was an impressive effort by all, especially since all proceeds went to the NW Avalanche Center. My new OR hat is off to you!

Yes big thanks to the sponsers. As always they put on a great show.
Also congrats to our local winners. Including Lowell who once again dominated his division and improved on his last year's time by ~10 minutes. Erin Spiess, who showed us that motherhood doesn't slow her down. Plus, my wife Holly who no matter how hard I try always seems to out-result me.
It was also great to see the out-of-towners come in and show us how fast you can be.

Yes, it was a good time (well, maybe not so much for me) and Kaj, Martin and the rest of the OR/Pro Guiding volunteers are to be commended. Sorry for keeping you out on the course for so long!
Congrats to Lowell, Seth and Holly, rockin' the "People with regular jobs that don't involve guiding or skiing" category!

There seems to be a problem with the auto-thumbnail feature that may have to do with the fact that there is a space in my name for the results jpeg, but there's a link to the results here: http://www.randosaigai.com/incoming.html (Sorry, just the ski results, no splitboard)

I just want to send a note of thanks out to everyone who attended VertFest - Crystal yesterday! You all helped to make it a huge success! VertFest is such a cool event because you all come out, have fun, ski hard, and inspire those lazy people sitting on the chairlift to check out what is so cool about backcountry skiing.
We broke last years record with 67 racers, which is really impressive considering the economy and the wacky winter we have had. It just goes to show how dedicated this community is to helping the Avalanche Center, and to celebrating all that is great about the backcountry. I can't tell you for certain just yet, but I think that we raised about $4,500.00 for Friends of NWAC. Nice work, and thank you!!
I consider myself a lucky lady to be part of such a cool event. Thanks for all the smiles and fun yesterday. VertFest is hands-down my favorite part of my job thanks to all of you.
Looking forward to seeing you all at VertFest-Alpental on March 28th!
Cheers! Sam
PS - Race results and photos will be posted as soon as possible at www.outdoorresearch.com/vertfest

On behalf of the Friends of NWAC, a HUGE thanks to OR, Crystal, Marmot, Pro Guiding, all of the reps, and especially everyone who showed up to race. You all made the event a fantastic success. NWAC would not exist without all of the support it gets from the backcountry community and the private sector. It's awesome! See you all at Alpental, and if not there, hopefully at the inaugural SnowBall dinner and auction on April 10.

Thanks Lowell. It was fun to shoot such photogenic people!
Several times during the day I was hit with memories of Carl - perhaps it was the combination of skiing and shooting, but it was quite powerful and made me smile.
Here are a couple haiku I wrote not long ago inspired by the trip to the St. Elias range with Bill Harlieb, Ron Gregg, and Carl:
The plane flies away We watch it become a speck High peaks all around
Is that snow So high up there? Or a cloud?
Dome of sky Mountains to the horizon Ski tracks in snow.
And one from a ski trip to Three Way Peak with Carl:
Almost to the pass An eagle soars in the sun Snow on Three Way Peak.
Great pictures. I love the guy in the Spidey suit!

Hi everyone!!
We are getting close to VertFest Alpental! We hope you will all consider coming out and racing! The big day is Saturday, March 28th!
Check out the website at www.outdoorresearch.com/vertfest for details!
Also, as you've heard me say several thousand times before, please RSVP (you'll see the link on the VertFest page) to give us a heads-up that you'll be coming. It's not committing you to be there, it just gives us a good idea how many people to expect so we can bring enough swag, prizes and beer!!
Shoot me a message with any questions!
Hope to see you all there! Sam

Once again, a huge thanks to all the folks at Outdoor Research and the Summit who made this happen. So great to get the backcountry community together for a super fun day, and the support for NWAC is awesome. Thanks to everyone who participated, and congrats to all the race winners. Hopefully some of you are back out there today and not recovering on the couch like I am.
Hope to see you all again soon at the Snowball Dinner and Auction to support NWAC in a couple of weeks....Friday, April 10. We are getting close to a sell-out, so get your tix now.

Thanks to everyone who supported and contributed to this great event.
It was my 1st randonee race and I had a blast. I even brought a neighbor of mine along who had never done randonee, and he started in the race category. I let him use my zealots and he wore his downhill boots (ouch). Thanks everyone!

I'm always amazed at how much fun I have at these events (not to mention what a workout it is)!
Thanks for the pictures and results Greg!
A rando rally is like a human powered roller coaster. It feels like the wheels are ready to fall off half the time, but what a ride.
Big thanks to Kaj Bune for all his work on Vertfest the past few years. It looks like Kaj has mentored a great team to carry on the event after he moves on from OR.
Kudos to power couple Seth and Holly Davis. Seth was the top local guy at both Crystal and Alpental this season and Holly took a 1st and a 2nd. Impressive!
Congrats to Monika for another win yesterday.
Finally, thanks to my carpool mates Garth and John for being such good company and strong competitors too. I think we all had second thoughts about the predicted weather but nobody wanted to back out first. I'm glad we went.
