Title: Partners needed 3-day Nov 10-12, Mount Winchester
Post by: jturn33 on 11/09/17, 11:31 AM
Happy three day ski weekend! I'm looking for partners for a veteran's day 3-day trip up in the Winchester Hut.

Friday heading up to the hut atop mount winchester and lapping Winchester or around twin lakes. Saturday heading north along the west face of Larabee and American Border Peak, into Canada and probably skiing the saddle to the west of Canadian Border Peak, then back to winchester hut (long day). Sunday skiing out. I will be leaving early friday morning (4:30) and would be glad to pick up anyone north of University of Washington.

Sorry for the late notice, my partner got too sick and had to bail.

Let me know if you're interested! Email jturn33@uw.edu. I can share CalTopo map of the basic travel plan.

Don't shoot the messenger, but Winchester Lookout is now locked November to May.
See link- https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/mbs/recarea/?recid=17586
I think it is due to the amount of damage that was occurring, which was done by winter visitors. Thought I'd save you a miserable discovery...

Appreciate the message Pinch, but alas it was too late - the miserable discovery did occur. Such a bummer, that place is truly special. I would have thought summertime visitors would have done more damage.

People clearing off snow with shovels and ice axes does a world of damage.

Sad to hear one of the only shelters in the high Cascades is gone.

Most summertime visitors don't stay overnight.

Reasons for Winchester closure: 2 shutters ripped loose due to propping during storm loading; 2 windows broken due to propping gear being loosened by winds sending gear through glass when shutter drops; storm door ripped loose 2x because skiers/boarders want light inside and don't secure against winds; interior door damaged by trying to open/close when floor inevitably ices over; threshold kicked to bits by ski boots; 6-10  typically people trying to stay overnight in structure (not designed for that); crap all over snowfield despite blue bag availability (or left behind for me to carry out); the damage to sill and floor cedar work from chipping ice with shovels...

Ten years of this despite pleas to simply not prop shutters , and secure the storm door closed at all times.  Bottom line: Winchester lookout was not designed for wintery season or residence of more than a few people; winter users are there for "pow pow" and care little of the structure's tenuous 80+ year history.

Thus the MBC board and Forest Service agreed, winter use is fundamentally incompatible with Winchester's National Historic Registry, and is an existential threat to ongoing restoration/preservation efforts.

Thank you for your work Mr. Inscho. For years it has been known that winter visitors need to be more respectful to the structure. It just didn't happen. Great photos by the way, been a fan for a while...
