Spray Park, Flett Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Washington
year-round backcountry skiing images
The northwest side of Mt. Rainier National Park holds some excellent backcountry and telemark skiing terrain, nestled on a shoulder of Mt. Rainier between the Carbon Glacier and North Mowich Glacier. Extended telemark skiing tours with long backcountry skiing runs are a big attraction, in areas such as Spray Park, Seattle Park, Mist Park, Flett Glacier, and Russell Glacier. Access is always long, but north-facing glacial pockets and active glaciers create good summer backcountry and telemark skiing opportunities. These summer skiing images are from an overnight trip to this area in August, on the hottest days of the year. We backpacked in over Knapsack Pass, over the shoulder of Mt. Pleasant, across Spray Park, and up to first snow at the high point of the Spray Park trail, 6500 feet. A walled camp at around 7000 feet placed us at the foot of the central Flett Glacier, and good skiing on smooth summer snow was had on different parts of that glacier.
