Sunrise - Grand Park - Burroughs Mountain, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
backcountry skiing and ski touring photos
On the northeast side of Mount Rainier, between the Emmons Glacier and Winthrop Glacier, is perhaps the most extensive backcountry skiing terrain on The Mountain, with miles and miles of spectacular ski touring terrain as well as moderate to steep backcountry skiing runs. Sunrise, Dege Peak, Sourdough Ridge, Berkeley Park, Mount Fremont, Granite Creek Park, Burroughs Mountain, and Grand Park are some of the interconnected areas on this shoulder of Mount Rainier.
Access from the highest road in Mount Rainier National Park, to Sunrise at 6400 ft., usually begins in early July, but much of the good backcountry ski touring melts out before then, leaving the steeper north facing ski runs which benefit from very easy access. Map readers can discover other access points for earlier spring skiing trips, both from the Sunrise area and from Grand Park to the north. This earlier access is often accomplished best using waxless, fishscale, metal-edged skis, which allow for uphill skiing without the use of climbing skins or grip wax, give good glide for covering ground in flatter areas, and perform well descending slopes using telemark turns. The images in the photo gallery below are from backcountry skiing trips to the northeast side of Mount Rainier in June and July.
