About Turns All Year CD-ROM
Turns All Year CD-ROM got its start in 2000 with the establishment of the Turns All Year web site. The web site was designed to be a one-stop resource for Pacific Northwest backcountry skiers and snowboarders, containing a wide range of useful links, information, and photos related to backcountry skiing and snowboarding: backcountry trip reports; links to weather, snow, avalanche, and backcountry access information; Pacific Northwest mountain panoramas; and photo galleries from backcountry skiing and snowboarding trips. As the number and scope of the snowboard/ski trip photo galleries increased, it became apparent that publishing them as a well organized and well indexed collection could provide a valuable visual resource for backcountry sliding enthusiasts. Thus Turns All Year CD-ROM was born.

Turns All Year CD-ROM is a web site on a CD-ROM. It is designed to be viewed using internet browser software on a personal computer running either Macintosh or Windows operating systems. It requires no software to run beyond that included with modern internet browsers, and an internet connection is not needed to use the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM contains over 180 photo galleries from Pacific Northwest backcountry skiing and snowboarding trips, year-round. With a few exceptions, each photo gallery is from a specific backcountry snowboarding and/or skiing trip.

All photo galleries are organized in the same way, with an index page containing miniture versions (thumbnails) of each photo in the gallery, as well as a trip report describing conditions found at the time of the trip. Each thumbnail photo can be clicked to view the full-sized version of the photo, and each photo has a descriptive caption. Most galleries contain a mix of booting and skinning photos, skiing and snowboarding action photos, and snowy mountain landscape photos of the terrain encountered on the trip as well as surrounding terrain of interest to backcountry recreationists. In each photo gallery the photos are presented in chronological order, making each gallery a photographic documentary of a particular trip.

The large number of skiing and snowboarding trip photo galleries contained on Turns All Year CD-ROM means that good methods of navigating them are essential, and several methods are available:
  • Lists: the photo galleries can be accessed from pages which list them by general trip location, detailed trip location, month, date, or theme.
  • Clickable maps: the photo galleries can be accessed from 16 maps, topographic and relief, which contain clickable hot spots (links) located at the starting point of each trip and which lead to the photo gallery from each trip. Please note that routes are not indicated on the maps.
  • Searching: a simple yet powerful search function is available which utilizes a database containing the date, location, description, and keywords for each photo gallery.
  • Browsing: each thumbnail page contains "previous" and "next" links to allow easy browsing directly through the galleries.
Warning: severe personal injury and death can result from participation in the types of activities depicted on Turns All Year CD-ROM: please read the disclaimer.

Turns All Year CD-ROM is not a guide book. The photo galleries on the CD-ROM do not come with the route descriptions or route maps one typically finds in a guide book, and this is because the CD-ROM is intentionally not a guide book. Although most of the photo galleries include a report of the conditions encountered, called a "trip report", this is simply a report of the access, trail, weather, snow, avalanche, or skiing and snowboarding conditions found at the time of the trip. There is no systematic attempt to provide detailed route descriptions such as one would expect to find in a guide book. Similarly, no systematic attempt is made to provide route maps, GPS coordinates, elevation profiles, or photos with routes indicated for the trips depicted on the CD-ROM. In addition, although the participants in the trips depicted on the CD-ROM were prepared for and evaluated avalanche hazards on their trips, no systematic attempt is made in trip reports to describe the avalanche hazards encountered or how the participants dealt with them.

Turns All Year CD-ROM not a guide book, it is a non-guide non-book! The photodocumentary style of the photo galleries can make the CD-ROM a useful visual resource when combined with other resources: traditional guide books, maps, and other online and offline resources. Backcountry skiers and snowboarders, and hikers and climbers too, can use the CD-ROM along with their other favorite resourses to research or gain inspiration for their next backcountry trip. Beyond recreationists, anyone who appreciates the beauty of the mountains of the Pacific Northwest should enjoy the mountain landscape photography on the CD-ROM and the special features, such as slideshows and mountain panoramas.

Author
The primary author of Turns All Year CD-ROM is Charles Eldridge, a year round skier living in Washington. He took many of the photographs contained on the CD-ROM, wrote many of the trip reports, digitally processed all of the photos, assembled the photo galleries, created the navgation for the galleries, stitched together the panoramas, assembled the slide shows, and completed the myriad other tasks required to complete the CD-ROM project. A large number of other people contributed to the CD-ROM in various ways (see below), and their contributions are greatly appreciated.

Contributors
Many people contributed to creating Turns All Year CD-ROM. The use of photo collections from backcountry skiing and snowboarding trips, the raw material for creating the photo galleries on the CD-ROM, was generously contributed by 48 photographers. Many of these photographers wrote trip reports for their trips. More than 120 people contributed permission for photos of themselves to be used on the CD-ROM. All of these people also contributed hard work, sweat, and sometimes pain, to making the skiing and snowboarding trips happen and provide the opportunity for the photos to be created.

Other Acknowledgements
Several photographers were exceedingly generous in allowing a large number of their ski trip photo collections to be used on the CD-ROM, and also in reviewing the final photo galleries created from their photos: Lowell Skoog, Jeff Huber, Michael Trommsdorff, and Pete Alderson. Thank you! Many people helped test features of the CD-ROM and their efforts are greatly appreciated. Several of these people in particular went well beyond what was hoped for: Larry Robinson, Don Brubeck, David Koelle, Danny Miller, Gary Vogt, and Greg Louie. Special thanks to Andy Palunas for feedback about the CD-ROM over the years, and to Larry Robinson for very useful discussions and other help near the end of the project. Finally, thanks to Jim O'Donnell and Doug Grady for all of their help!
