Backcountry skiing trip report: South face of Alaska Mountain skiing via Gold Creek, Snoqualmie Pass backcountry, Washington, January 27-28, 2007 I've been wanting to ski the south face of Alaska Mountain for a while and given the weather it sure seemed like it would be a good bet for some mid-winter corn this weekend. Marcus, Anastasia, Kirsten, Nate, Mica, Andy, Becky, and I, with Tundra (Andy's two-year old Akita) tracked the heck outta the south face today. Winter corn snow condtions were fantastic. Leisurely day yesterday skiing up Gold Creek valley...unbreakable crust in the trees and a leftover skin track from Sky and Casey skiing in the area early in the week made for fast travel. Regarding the approach and travel in Gold Creek valley: there's currently a huge pile of avy debris from one of the chutes on Alta Mountain that has completely spanned Gold Creek and allows one to get from the east side of the valley over to the west side without fording through the water...the debris pile is right before you get to where Silver Creek runs into Gold Creek...could be a useful bridge for anyone skiing the Kendall Peak couloirs and exiting via Gold Creek. Cramponed up one of the ribs on the south face of Alaska Mountain early this morning and had to wait around on the summit for about an hour until corn-o-clock struck (11am). Our huge crew then split up and took adjacent ribs back down...definitely gotta get back up there and ski the south side of Chikamin Peak, it looks amazing. Pete |
