Mt. Rainier South Galleries
The south side of Mt. Rainier...Paradise, Panorama Point, the Muir snowfield, Camp Muir...it is easy to take this area for granted when visiting for the 30th time. But close your eyes, wipe your mind blank, and then open your eyes...WOW! It is truly a stunning place, and the ordinary slog up to Camp Muir provides some of the best big views of The Mountain anywhere on the south side. Don't like crowds? Well, since everybody goes to the Muir snowfield, just go anywhere else. It is hard to find north-facing slopes on this side of the mountain, but hey, that's what the Tatoosh Range is for.

A late October backcountry skiing trip to the south side of Mount Rainier, from Paradise up to the Muir Snowfield, then skiing down the Paradise Glacier on generally great snow.
  • September 24, 2006: The Patches of Paradise: Paradise Glacier fall skiing, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
A fall skiing backcountry trip to the Paradise Glacier in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, where a skim of new snow made for nice turns on this bluebird day.
  • June 30-July 1, 2006: Mount Rainier summit skiing via Fuhrer Finger, Wilson Glacier, Nisqually Glacier, Washington
Photos from a two-day backcountry skiing ascent to and descent from the summit of Mount Rainier via Wilson Glacier, Fuhrer Finger, and Nisqually Glacier in July.
  • June 10, 2006: Paradise to White River ski traverse, Emmons Glacier Traverse, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
Photos from a backcountry skiing trip to Mount Rainier, Washington, doing the Emmons Glacier traverse, Paradise to White River: up Muir snowfield, across Cowlitz Glacier, Ingraham Glacier, and Emmons Glacier, then down Inter Glacier to White River.
  • October 21, 2005: Fall snowboarding, Muir snowfield, Mount Rainier, Washington
Images from a backcountry snowboarding and skiing trip to Camp Muir and the Muir snowfield on the south side of Mt. Rainier. Fall storms had covered summer's dirty hard snow and we found excellent boarding conditions on a warm bluebird day.
  • September 13, 2005: Muir minefield, Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington
Photos from a backcountry skiing trip to Mt. Rainier National Park for September turns on the Muir snowfield, where late summer storm had coated the Muir snowfield with just enough new snow to make the skiing reasonably fun.
  • May 6, 2005: Skiing and snowboarding, Muir snowfield, Mount Rainier, Washington
Images from a May backcountry trip to the Muir snowfield and Panorama Point on the south side of Mount Rainier. Fogged out of the Nisqually Chutes, we found great turns around Panorama Point - lots of pictures of split boarding, snowboarding, and skiing.
  • March 11, 2005: Van Trump Park, Van Trump Glaciers, The Turtle, Mount Rainier
45 photos from a spring backcountry skiing trip on the south side of Mount Rainier. Starting at 3600 feet in snow-free forest, we hiked past Comet Falls and then skinned up Van Trump Park, Van Trump Glaciers, and onto the Turtle to around 10,200 feet. Breakable crust on the Turtle turned into generally nice spring skiing on the Van Trump Glaciers; lots of photos of telemark skiing and randonee skiing (alpine touring).
  • February 2, 2005: Muir snowfield, Paradise Glacier, Mount Rainier, Washington
Low snow coverage everywhere but plenty for skiing. A variety of not-so-great snow conditions gave way to nice spring skiing below 7500 feet, and the best turns were just a few minutes from the parking lot.
  • December 18, 2004: Camp Muir, Nisqually Chutes, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
Backcountry skiing photos from a December trip from Paradise to Camp Muir, with skiing on the Muir snowfield and the Nisqually Chutes down to the Nisqually Glacier. Blue skies, t-shirt temperatures, beautiful winter lighting, and great corn snow skiing in the Nisqually Chutes.
  • September 25, 2004: Jumps and Turns on the Muir Snowfield
Eight year old Katie hiked up to Camp Muir with her family and then skied down, enjoying some of the finest September skiing we've had in years. Five days earlier Katie and her family had done this same trip, but in a whiteout. Here is Katie's skiing trip report.
  • September 24, 2004: Muir Snowfield, Mt. Rainier
Photos from a fall backcountry skiing trip to the Muir snowfield and Camp Muir, on the south side of Mt. Rainier. September storms had deposited a covering of new snow and the corn snow skiing was excellent on this bluebird day.
  • September 6, 2004: Muir Snowfield, Mt. Rainier, Washington
Enough new snow had fallen on the Muir snowfield above Moon Rocks that we enjoyed perfect September corn snow skiing conditions, and a ski run of 2500 vertical feet.
  • August 8, 2004: Paradise Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Washington
30 photos of August turns from a backcountry skiing trip to the Paradise Glacier - Cowlitz Glacier area on the south side of Mt. Rainier.
  • November 30, 2003: Paradise, Mt. Rainier, Washington
A sunny day and wind-sheltered south slope allowed the rain crust to thaw just right to produce perfect corn snow skiing conditions.
  • October 19, 2003: Panorama Point, Mt. Rainier, Washington
A thin but good quality cover of new snow provided for reasonable backcountry skiing around Panorama Point, and October was in the bag.
  • September 14, 2003: Muir snowfield and Paradise Glacier, Mt. Rainier
Photos from a backcountry summer skiing trip to the Muir snowfield and Paradise Glacier on Mt. Rainier for September turns. Sunny weather for the hike up promised more great summer skiing, but fog moved in for the ski down, making routefinding tricky.
  • July 31, 2003: Lower Paradise Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Washington
Twelve photos from a kids backcountry skiing trip to the south side of Mt. Rainier in late July.
  • July 20, 2003: Paradise Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Washington
Corn snow, warm weather, and lots of summer skiing in shorts - includes many photos of telemark skiing and randonee skiing.
  • June 25, 2003: Paradise Glacier, Camp Muir, Mt. Rainier, Washington
Skiing photos from a backcountry trip to the south side of Mt. Rainier in late June. We skinned from Mazama Ridge up the Paradise Glacier to Camp Muir, then found great skiing descending the Paradise Glacier.
  • January 17, 2003: Muir Snowfield - Camp Muir, Mt. Rainier
Four backcountry skiers made the trip up to Camp Muir at 10,000 feet in spring-like weather. Warm sunshine and light breezes produced corn snow conditions on much of the Muir snowfield, and Paradise reached 64 degrees. Twelve photos of telemark skiing, the Muir snowfield, the Nisqually Glacier, and the summit of Mt. Rainier.
  • January 5, 2003: Edith Creek basin - Mazama Ridge, Mt. Rainier
Photos from a backcountry skiing trip to the Mazama Ridge - Edith Creek basin area near Paradise, on the south side of Mt. Rainier. Heavy rain the previous day had soaked the snowpack, but about 6 inches of snow had fallen as the precipitation trailed off, and we found excellent backcountry skiing conditions: cold, loose snow overlying a re-freezing rain crust.
  • August 4, 2002: Lower Paradise Glacier, Mt. Rainier N.P., Washington
August turns on good snow in interesting weather, with fog on the ascent giving way to snow squalls and sunbreaks. The skiing was great on smooth corn snow, which, if not abundant, was fully sufficient to ski several different runs.
  • February 27, 2002: Lower Paradise Glacier, Mt. Rainier National Park
Strong east winds had scoured some areas down to a solid rain crust, but the weather was good for getting above treeline and we found some good skiing in protected pockets of powder on the lower Paradise Glacier.
