We had beautiful weather and generally good snow conditions on this spectacular route under Summit Chief Mountain and Bears Breast Mountain, across Chain Lakes basin, and up the west ridge of Mt. Hinman.

  • May 3, 2006: Backcountry ski touring, Miller River, Lake Dorothy to Big Snow Mountain, Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area, Washington
    Using lightweight telemark ski equipment we skied across Lake Dorothy, up to Gold Lake and then to Big Snow Mountain, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area of Washington State. The weather, snow, and skiing conditions were perfect and made it possible to do this long ski trip in one day.

    Thirty photos from a backcountry skiing trip to Jim Hill Mountain via Henry Creek on a bluebird day with classic Stevens smoke powder snow. With the arrival of several more groups of skiers the slopes eventually got pretty tracked out, but everyone found nice lines and had fantastic turns.

    45 photos from a spring backcountry skiing trip on the south side of Mount Rainier. Starting at 3600 feet in snow-free forest, we hiked past Comet Falls and then skinned up Van Trump Park, Van Trump Glaciers, and onto the Turtle to around 10,200 feet. Breakable crust on the Turtle turned into generally nice spring skiing on the Van Trump Glaciers; lots of photos of telemark skiing and randonee skiing (alpine touring).

    Low snow coverage everywhere but plenty for skiing. A variety of not-so-great snow conditions gave way to nice spring skiing below 7500 feet, and the best turns were just a few minutes from the parking lot.

    Backcountry skiing photos from a December trip from Paradise to Camp Muir, with skiing on the Muir snowfield and the Nisqually Chutes down to the Nisqually Glacier. Blue skies, t-shirt temperatures, beautiful winter lighting, and great corn snow skiing in the Nisqually Chutes.

    Photos from a fall backcountry skiing trip to the Muir snowfield and Camp Muir, on the south side of Mt. Rainier. September storms had deposited a covering of new snow and the corn snow skiing was excellent on this bluebird day.

    Enough new snow had fallen on the Muir snowfield above Moon Rocks that we enjoyed perfect September corn snow skiing conditions, and a ski run of 2500 vertical feet.

    Fifteen photos from a June backcountry skiing trip to the south side of Mount Adams, Washington. The ascent route was the standard south climb up Suksdorf Ridge, and the descent featured great skiing in the southwest chutes on soft and creamy snow.

    24 backcountry skiing photos are from a June trip to the east peak of Mt. Daniel, via the Cle Elum River, Cathedral Rock, and Peggy's Pond. The weather was perfect, the coverage was good, and all but the highest snow made for good skiing.

    A one day skiing traverse of Mount Baker, Watsons Traverse, from Coleman Glacier in the west, over the summit, and down Park Glacier to Ptarmigan Ridge and Mount Baker ski area in the east.
  • May 1, 2004 and May 31, 2004: Mt. Hood backcountry skiing
    Photos from May backcountry skiing trips to the south side of Mt. Hood, Oregon, including an early May trip to Mt. Hood's summit via the Hogsback and Pearly Gates, and a late May trip to Illumination Saddle.
  • April 30, 2004: Mowich Lake, Spray Park, Flett Glacier, Mt. Rainier
    Our ski touring route led us past Mowich Lake, over Knapsack Pass and Mt. Pleasant, across Spray Park, and up the Flett Glacier to the base of Observation Rock. The snow was mostly firm and fast on this sunny day, and good turns were found descending the Flett Glacier back to Spray Park.
  • April 9, 2004: Navaho Peak, North Fork Teanaway, eastern Washington Cascades
    Backcountry skiing photos from an April trip to Navaho Peak, in the North Fork Teanaway River drainage of the Wenatchee National Forest of Washington. A consolidated snowpack and a clear, cold night followed by this cool sunny day produced almost perfect corn skiing conditions in glades and on The Blaze on the south side of Navaho Peak.
  • March 10, 2004: Silver Creek, Wenatchee National Forest, Washington
    The previous weekend's reports of snow whoomphing and slab avalanches led us to do this long forest tour with minimal avalanche exposure. On slopes at the end of the valley, we abandoned our quest for a few turns when we experienced whoomphing of the snow under our skis.

    Photos from a backcountry powder skiing trip to the Snoqualmie Pass area of Washington. Very cold temperatures and lots of new snow provided excellent backcountry powder skiing in glades and trees.

    A sunny day and wind-sheltered south slope allowed the rain crust to thaw just right to produce perfect corn snow skiing conditions.
  • June 25, 2003: Paradise Glacier, Camp Muir, Mt. Rainier, Washington
    Skiing photos from a backcountry trip to the south side of Mt. Rainier in late June. We skinned from Mazama Ridge up the Paradise Glacier to Camp Muir, then found great skiing descending the Paradise Glacier.
  • June 17, 2003: Sunrise to 3rd Burroughs Mountain, Mt. Rainier, Washington
    Photos from a backcountry skiing trip from Sunrise to 3rd Burroughs Mountain on the northeast side of Mt. Rainier National Park, with great views of Mt. Rainier, the Emmons Glacier, Interglacier, Steamboat Prow, and the Cowlitz Chimneys.
  • June 5-8, 2003, days 1+2: North side of Mt. Adams, Washington
    We used waxless skis to travel up and across the Adams Glacier, accessing skiing runs below the north ridge, Adams Glacier icefall, and the north face of the northwest ridge (NFNWR).
  • February 6, 2003: Table Mountain, Mt. Baker backcountry, Washington
    On this glorious day we found beautiful powder snow well bonded to a rain crust, and skied north-facing slopes of Table Mountain. The gallery includes telemark backcountry skiing photos as well as landscape photos of Mt. Shuksan and Shuksan Arm.
  • January 17, 2003: Muir Snowfield - Camp Muir, Mt. Rainier
    Four backcountry skiers made the trip up to Camp Muir at 10,000 feet in spring-like weather. Warm sunshine and light breezes produced corn snow conditions on much of the Muir snowfield, and Paradise reached 64 degrees. Twelve photos of telemark skiing, the Muir snowfield, the Nisqually Glacier, and the summit of Mt. Rainier.
  • October 31, 2002: Year-round desperation, Muir Snowfield, Mt. Rainier
    12 photos from a backcountry trip to the Muir snowfield on the south side of Mt. Rainier to do some October turns. Strong winds had blown away most of the thin cover of new snow, but a fairly nice, short run was found. The gallery includes action photos of both snowboarding and telemark skiing.
  • June 21-25, 2002, Days 1+2: Goat Rocks Wilderness, Washington
    Photos from days one and two of our annual June ski trip. Access was perfect, the weather was perfect, and the snow was near perfect, too. Day one culminated in an exploratory tour on the west slopes of the Goat Rocks crest. Day two led us over the crest and to the top of Old Snowy Mountain, then down the NE facing bowl of McCall Basin. Of course, we had to get back to camp, which meant back over the Crest and more telemark skiing runs. Includes a Goat Rocks overview from the north, with peaks labeled.
  • June, 1993: Mount Jefferson via Milk Creek gullies, Oregon Cascade Mountains
    Photos from a backcountry skiing trip to Mount Jefferson, a volcano south of Mount Hood in the Oregon Cascades. Mount Jefferson was approached from the west via Milk Creek and the Milk Creek gullies and skied using very short skis (figls or firn gliders).
  • June, 1989: Bailey Range ski traverse, Sol Duc River to Hoh River, Mount Olympus, Olympic Mountains, Olympic National Park, Washington
    Ski touring photos from a five day Bailey Range ski traverse from Sol Duc River (Soleduck River) to Hoh River in the Olympic Mountains of Washington. The group had incredible June weather for skiing and ski touring, including a ski ascent and descent of Mount Olympus.
