After a winter characterized by long dry periods interspersed with precipitation at high snow levels, early March finally brought the combination of heavy precipitation and low snow levels needed to find powder snow in the old-growth forest at Snoqualmie Pass. - November 26, 2002: Corral Pass and Chinook Pass, Washington
Dry fall weather had resulted in not nearly enough snow to ski at Corral Pass, and just enough snow to do a little skiing around Tipsoo Lake and Yakima Peak at Chinook Pass. Most of the snow was solidly-frozen rain crust, but a few spots warmed enough in the sun to provide very enjoyable spring-like skiing.
- November 14, 2002: Grand Park fall ski touring, Mt. Rainier National Park
We hiked the pleasant 2 mile trail to the plateau of Grand Park, on the north edge of Mt. Rainier National Park, and found 6 inches of snowpack evenly overlying the meadows there. Rainier cleared off, giving us great views of the mountain's north face.

- September 1, 2002: Lower Paradise Glacier fall skiing, Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington
"According to Ron's GPS, again we skied in the lower Paradise Glacier area. I wouldn't have known otherwise in the foggy conditions. Cooler weather this time so the suncups were harder and chattery," wrote Robie. But three year-round skiers got some September turns in on the first possible day, and had a pretty good time doing so.
- August 13-14, 2002: Spray Park, Flett Glacier summer skiing, Mount Rainier, Washington
Year-round skier Danny Miller skied in his 106th consecutive month on the Flett Glacier, surpassing the known Washington record of 105 months held by Jim 'Jaydee' Drannan. The skiable snow was a long way in, but the hot sunny days made the snow good for skiing.
- August 4, 2002: Lower Paradise Glacier skiing, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington
August turns on good snow in interesting weather, with fog on the ascent giving way to snow squalls and sunbreaks. The skiing was great on smooth corn snow, which, if not abundant, was fully sufficient to ski several different runs.

- July 17, 2002: Ptarmigan Ridge ski touring, Mt. Baker backcountry, Washington
Lots of snow and a long ridge combined for a long tour. Firm, suncupped and runneled snow in most places discouraged run making, but good turns were found at the far end of the tour, near Mt. Baker's Rainbow Glacier, and the scenery was everywhere sublime.
- July 7, 2002: Sourdough & 2nd Burroughs Chutes ski fest, Sunrise, Mt. Rainier National Park

- July 5, 2002: Heliotrope Ridge-Coleman Glacier skiing, Mt. Baker, Washington
Four inches of new on the smooth snow of the Coleman Glacier meant spectacular July skiing on this 4300' run. I joined year-round skier TOMSKI (275 consecutive months of skiing) for a hike up the Heliotrope Ridge trail to skiable snow, and we climbed to 9200' on Mt. Baker before starting our run.

On day four we went back to the top of Old Snowy for another run into McCall Basin, then did some shorter runs on east slopes as we worked our way back to our favorite west side run.
- June 21-25, 2002, Days 1 and 2: Goat Rocks Wilderness skiing, Washington
Photos from days one and two of our annual June ski trip. Access was perfect, the weather was perfect, and the snow was near perfect, too. Day one culminated in an exploratory tour on the west slopes of the Goat Rocks crest. Day two led us over the crest and to the top of Old Snowy Mountain, then down the NE facing bowl of McCall Basin. Of course, we had to get back to camp, which meant back over the Crest and more telemark skiing runs. Includes a Goat Rocks overview from the north, with peaks labeled.
- June 12, 2002: Grand Park to 3rd Burroughs Mountain ski touring, Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington

- June 7, 2002: Sunrise - 3rd Burroughs Mountain ski touring, Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington
"Low freezing level and chance of afternoon snow." We found abundant sunshine on our ski from Sunrise to 3rd Burroughs Mountain, over the intervening 1st and 2nd Burroughs, and got great views of Mt. Rainier all along the way. On our return, however, a vigorous snowstorm arrived, and by the time we were back to Sunrise 4" of 25 degree powder had fallen, providing winter-like skiing in June.
- June 4-5, 2002: Windy Pass kids skiing and snow camping, Snoqualmie Pass, Washington
Too late for my annual ski overnighter with my daughter? Nah, this is the Cascades, and with our good snow year there was still plenty of snow, even at Snoqualmie Pass. Too much, in fact, which led to several rounds of all-terrain skiing to connect the snow patches low down on the Cold Creek Road.

- May 23, 2002: Lake Ann, Mt. Baker backcountry, Washington

- May 19, 2002: Snoqualmie Pass spring skiing, Washington
A climb through old-growth forest and then up steep open slopes to a 5600' ridge. We triggered some small wet surface slides on the upper part of the descent, but the skiing got better and better as we went down. So good, in fact, that we went back up for a second run.
- May 16, 2002: Snoqualmie Mountain skiing, Commonwealth Basin, Snoqualmie Pass, Washington
A short trip through old-growth forest and up a steep ridge to the top of 6600' Snoqualmie Mountain. Most of the skiing was good, and the views were spectacular - from Adams to Baker, and right down into the Alpental valley.

The gallery includes a panorama of the head of the Silver Creek valley.
- April 14, 2002: Nordic Pass and Ski Acres spring powder, Snoqualmie Pass, Washington

A backcountry skiing trip to Mount St. Helens in February, from Marble Mountain Snow Park to the crater rim via Worm Flows and Swift Glacier.
- January 27, 2002: Bear Gap, Crystal Mountain backcountry skiing, Washington.
Deep powder, high avalanche danger. The snow had been falling continuously for days, with Green Valley receiving 38" in 24 hours a couple of days earlier, so we chose a destination with limited avalanche exposure. Beautiful snow, beautiful forest, difficult trail breaking, and a powdery gulch with not enough turns.
- December 30, 2001: McClure Rock, Paradise, Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington.
We had to hunt a little for good skiing this day, but found it on SE slopes below McClure Rock. Afterwards, a short tour near the lower Paradise Glacier provided spectacular scenery.

- August 12, 2001: Dusty Runs: lower Paradise Glacier area, Mt. Rainier, Washington
Four year-round skiers plus a hitchhiker had to utilize their secret weapon, the Stash, just to make it through August in this low snow year. Great skiing was found, but it was apparent that the Stash would need a winter recharge and be unavailable for its traditional September and October duties.
